The suite of programs is the result of a team effort by two industry professionals, Brendan Hanna, with 35 years in the furniture industry, and his sister Gerri Hanna, an IT professional with 20 years experience in writing and implementing computer systems for small business.
Brendan was a
commercial furniture manufacturer for 20 years and a member of industry
committees including the SA Guild
of Furniture Manufacturers, SA Furniture Industry Training Council, and the
Marleston College of TAFE. As a consultant to the industry he began to develop
software to simplify some of the tedious managerial tasks confronting
manufacturers. “Many managers are quick to solve production problems by
purchasing expensive machinery but too often they neglect spending modest
amounts on ways to resolve bottlenecks in administration.” says Brendan. “The
time you spend putting systems into practise is rewarded many times over by
releasing you to concentrate on the business you are there for. It enables other
staff to manage admin tasks, freeing you
up for a game of golf, time with the
family or even a holiday, knowing that your business will run smoothly in your
absence. At the end of the day, you control your business better instead of
letting your business control you.”

Gerri spent many years developing software for various small industries including medical, accounting, security, food services, management information and many others. “My career in computers began around the time that PC’s began to take over from mainframes and more and more industries started to use them. I saw the problems staff had with changes in work practises brought about by automation and looked for ways in my programming to help make the changeover smooth and acceptable. I applied these guidelines to these programs as well as keeping them as close as possible to the normal processes used in quoting, scheduling and purchasing, so that they are fairly instinctive for staff who do these jobs already. Our software is inexpensive, tailored to this industry, and flexible enough to adapt to different work practices. People with only very basic computer skills find it simple to use”, says Gerri. “Keeping it user-friendly is our guiding principle.”
In developing QuikQuote, Brendan and Gerri collaborated with Chris Whelan, a Director of C.L.Whelan and Associates, Business Advisor, Chartered Accountant and a specialist in costing and pricing products for the manufacturing sector. Chris has also been a business consultant to the FIAA and conducted seminars on product costing for the furniture industry. Chris’s input has ensured that QuikQuote provides best practise in costing.
